SpellRupees — numbers to words in Excel
A free Excel add-in that gives you =SpellRupees(A1) — turn amounts into
Indian-format words (Crores, Lakhs, Thousands, Rupees, Paise) for vouchers, muster
rolls, cheques and bills.

One-click .bat installer registers the add-in system-wide, so =SpellRupees() works in every workbook. No admin rights needed.
What it does
=SpellRupees(A1) turns a number in a cell into spelled-out Indian currency. It works across
all Excel workbooks on your machine once installed — nothing to copy into individual files.

How to use it
=SpellRupees(1000) → One Thousand Rupees Only
=SpellRupees(A2) → spells out whatever number is in A2
=SpellRupees(SUM(B2:B10)) → spells out the sum of a range - Input can be a literal number, a cell reference, or any formula that returns a number.
- Amounts up to 99,99,99,99,999 (99 Arab 99 Crore 99 Lakh 99 Thousand 999) are supported.
- Paise (decimal) values are rounded to 2 decimal places.
- Negative numbers return an error — negate the input before spelling if needed.
Install — 1-click (recommended)
- Download
install_addin.bat(button above). - Double-click it to run.
- Open (or restart) Excel —
=SpellRupees()is ready.
The installer downloads SubhoSpellRupees.xlam, places it in
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\AddIns\, and registers it so Excel loads it on every startup. No admin
rights required.
Install — manual
- Download
SubhoSpellRupees.xlamand copy it to%APPDATA%\Microsoft\AddIns\(press Win+R, type that path, Enter). - In Excel: File → Options → Add-ins; set Manage to Excel Add-ins → Go.
- Click Browse, select the file, OK; tick SubhoSpellRupees and OK.
Requirements
- Microsoft Excel 2010 or later (Windows), Windows 7 or later.
- Internet connection for the installer's initial download only.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work in every workbook?
Yes. Once installed, =SpellRupees() is available in every workbook on that PC — you don't
copy anything into individual files.
The function isn't found after installing.
Close Excel completely and reopen it. If it persists, check that SubhoSpellRupees.xlam
exists in %APPDATA%\Microsoft\AddIns\.
“Failed to download file” during install.
Check your internet connection. Behind a corporate proxy, download the .xlam manually and
use the manual install above.
Macro security warning.
Go to File → Options → Trust Center → Trust Center Settings → Trusted Locations and add
%APPDATA%\Microsoft\AddIns\ — the standard trusted location for Excel add-ins.
Is it safe? Where does my data go?
All computation is local — no data leaves your machine when you use =SpellRupees(). The
installer downloads only from the public GitHub repository over HTTPS, and no admin rights are required.
How do I uninstall it?
In Excel: File → Options → Add-ins → Manage: Excel Add-ins → Go, untick
SubhoSpellRupees, OK, then delete %APPDATA%\Microsoft\AddIns\SubhoSpellRupees.xlam.
