What does this tool do?
Many Indian government portals like NREGA (nrega.nic.in) and VBGRAMG require Java applets for digital signatures. Modern browsers like Chrome and Edge have dropped Java support entirely. This tool solves the problem by installing the exact versions of Java and Firefox that work with these portals — and stops Firefox from ever auto-updating to an incompatible version.
- Java 8 JRE (32-bit) — installs Oracle Java 8, the official runtime that includes the
browser plugin (
npjp2.dll) required by NREGA/VBGRAMG signing applets. Downloaded straight from Oracle and pre-configured with relaxed security for government portals. - Firefox 43.0.1 (32-bit) — the last Firefox version with full Java-applet (NPAPI) support, downloaded directly from Mozilla's official archive.
- Update protection — Firefox auto-update is locked down with 5 independent layers:
config lock (
mozilla.cfg), maintenance-service disable, updater removal, update-server host blocking, and scheduled-task cleanup. Your setup stays intact. - One-click install — just double-click
setup.bat. The script handles admin elevation, downloading, installing, and configuring everything automatically.
How to use it
- Download
setup.bat— a single file, no ZIP to extract. - Double-click to run — Windows asks for administrator permission; click “Yes”. The script downloads everything it needs and starts automatically.
- Wait 2–5 minutes — it downloads Firefox 43.0.1 and Java 8, installs them silently, configures security, and disables Firefox auto-update.
- Open Firefox 43 from the desktop shortcut and navigate to your NREGA / VBGRAMG portal; use the digital signature feature as usual.
Editing the exception site list
Before running the setup, open exception.sites with Notepad and add your portal URLs, one per
line (include http:// or https://). Common URLs like nrega.nic.in
are pre-filled. If you edit the file after running setup, just double-click setup.bat again to
apply the changes.
System requirements
- OS: Windows 10 or Windows 11 (32-bit or 64-bit).
- Internet: required for first-time download (~100 MB total).
- Disk space: ~300 MB free.
- Other browsers: not affected — use Firefox 43 only for NREGA/VBGRAMG work.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I need an old version of Firefox for NREGA digital signature?
NREGA and VBGRAMG portals use Java applets for digital signatures. From 2017 all modern browsers (Chrome, Edge, Firefox 52+) removed support for Java plugins (NPAPI). Firefox 43.0.1 is one of the last stable versions that fully supports Java applets, making it necessary for DSC operations.
What is VBGRAMG and why does it need Java?
VBGRAMG is a government rural-development portal. It uses Java-based digital-signature components for secure authentication and document signing, which require Java 8 (32-bit) running inside a compatible browser.
Is this tool safe to use?
Yes. Firefox is downloaded directly from Mozilla's official archive (ftp.mozilla.org) and Java directly from Oracle's official java.com server — no third-party mirrors. The entire setup script source is open on GitHub for inspection.
Why is Firefox auto-update disabled?
If Firefox updates to a newer version it permanently loses Java-applet support, and your NREGA/VBGRAMG signatures stop working. The tool applies 5 independent protection layers so Firefox stays at 43.0.1.
Can I use this alongside my regular browser?
Absolutely. Firefox 43 installs to its own folder and does not interfere with Chrome, Edge, or any other browser. Use Firefox 43 only for DSC work and your regular browser for everything else.
How do I add my portal URLs to the Java exception list?
Open exception.sites in the setup folder with Notepad, add your portal URLs (one per line,
with http:// or https://), save, and run setup.bat again to apply.
Why Oracle Java and not a free open-source Java?
These portals need the Java browser plugin that runs inside Firefox. Only Oracle's Java 8 includes this plugin — open-source builds (Azul Zulu, Temurin, Corretto) ship the Java engine but omit the browser plugin, so applets will not load. The tool downloads Oracle Java 8 (32-bit) directly from java.com, free for this use.
Troubleshooting
- Java applet not loading: in Firefox 43 type
about:addons→ Plugins → set “Java(TM) Platform” to “Always Activate”. Make sure you're using the installed Firefox 43. - Digital signature popup not appearing: add your portal URL to
exception.sitesand re-runsetup.bat. - Windows SmartScreen warning: click “More info” → “Run anyway”. This is normal for downloaded scripts.
- “Java is not recognized” error: re-run
setup.batto reinstall Java; if it persists, restart your computer after installation. - Firefox updated despite protection: re-run
setup.batto reinstall Firefox 43.0.1 and re-apply all update blocks.
